First breeding swift returned yesterday evening and settled down for well earned rest. This box was taken up last June and the nest constructed for breeding this year.

House martins busily collecting mud for their nests Holkham. Moments before this a young child on a bike nearly ran over my phone 😆🙄

A very exciting visit from Paul Stevens Ecology Services this morning - we now have House Martin and Swift boxes installed on the front of school. Reception took the opportunity to sit back and watch Paul at work. BBC Springwatch Sussex Wildlife Trust 🦔 South Downs National Park

Hedgerows are a brilliant source of food and shelter for a wide range of birds, which can be tricky to see in the tangle of twigs and branches. Which 6 species can you find in this all-natural, totally un-doctored photo of an autumn hedgerow and its many inhabitants? #AutumnWatch

A garden hedge: Filters wind (slows it down) Absorbs water (prevents flooding) Absorbs CO2 (fights climate change) Houses wildlife (promotes biodiversity) There are 22 million gardens in the UK. Many of them will lose a fence panel this weekend. Please replace with a hedge 🌳

Incredible; create a supplementary feeding plot, carry out daily monitoring via a trail camera, locate a 'purring' male, await a female & record the pair successfully feeding !! The next stage will be to locate the nest site & make damn sure they are successful! Operation Turtle Dove

Big hedges have more flowers, fruits & nuts to sustain wildlife, they store more carbon in the wood & below ground, they improve soil health & provide food & nutrients for cattle. There's no reason to trim them annually. Making this one change could transform our countryside 🌳

Thanks to Paul Stevens Ecological Services for building and installing our new owl box. The box replaces one of our older, well-used nest boxes in the Wetland Discovery area. We'll be watching and checking it for owlets in the ringing season. Paul Stevens💙
