We will no longer enable Tribune Publishing’s bad behavior, and condemn Tribune and Alden for balancing their books on the backs of staff. We will make strong efforts to take the vacation time we are owed.

Just like our colleagues are not interested at this time in taking on Tribune’s operating costs, we are not agreeable to continuing to exploit ourselves to line the pockets of shareholders and predatory hedge funds.

This company brings in lots of cash. But it typically doesn't reinvest that money in journalism that serves readers. If Tribune Publishing Company wants a viable future for the company, it hasn't shown. Instead, our newsrooms are being strip-mined to make some rich people slightly richer.

Chicago needs strong newspapers like the Chicago Tribune. As I said last year, I have concerns over Alden Global Capital's past business practices, including mass layoffs and lack of transparency.

Big investors including Florida’s Mason Slaine already have committed to voting no. Shareholders must follow his lead, give Tribune Publishing newspapers breathing room as other ownership bids develop, and do the right thing for democracy in America, cc Dr. Pat Soon-Shiong
