Overwhelmed right now with so many things. But this news 🙏🏽 Thank you to the Nan Shepherd Prize judges for believing in this work, to everyone at Canongate (has left), to the longlisted writers – many of whom have become friends, to @PortyLiterary for the guidance I truly love my community.

A pivotal thread in this book is about navigating world and body in the wake of 9/11 as a young Muslim girl. I find myself now reflecting on this, on these essays, in an ultimately shifted, important, way. Resolution, peace, harmony, acceptance – all these changed meanings.

I want to do justice to the younger version of me who needs this book. I also want to, and need to, acknowledge the pain that – it seems – doesn't go away. Even when you think it might have left. I'm so so so grateful, so lucky, for the chance. ❤️
