Hoverflies migrating S in Autumn actively choose southward headed winds or winds that are weak enough to fly against - ignoring unfavourable winds. Fascinating little creatures. New paper from Boya Gao and the rest of us out today in The Royal Society. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.10…

The Death's Head Hawkmoths are coming through in far greater numbers now as we (The Genetics of Migration Lab) study #insectmigration in the Pyrenees. These moths are v migratory and will travel to Africa in the Autumn, they squeak AND they smell like honey - something they steal from honeybees!

Our paper on the drivers of Painted Lady migration, led by gao & Constanti Stefanescu, is now out in PNAS. We show that sub-Saharan winter rainfall levels is key to the numbers that arrive in Europe each spring Insect Migration Butterfly Migration University of Exeter CEC
