The Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, Cherelle Parker, announced that 25 Philadelphia Schools will offer year round instruction as part of a pilot program. Mastery Charter School Pickett Campus is one of those schools. The mayor says year round school will close the enrichment gap & help students succeed.

The 6-ft. emu that broke out of its enclosure during July 4 fireworks has been captured after 24 hours on the loose in Bucks County. CBS Philadelphia was the only station there as workers hauled the 150-lb. flightless bird out of the woods and brought it back to the farm.

Despite community backlash, Shelly the tortoise has been removed from his home at the Scenic Hills Elementary School ecology center. Today the 75-lb. reptile was loaded into a dog crate and driven to his new home in the backyard of retired 2nd grade teacher Donna Storti.

The 6 people working in the vineyard at Penns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford are starting their shift earlier and working fewer hours because of the heat wave. During the hottest part of the day, they are in tractors, which have A/C. The business produces 10K cases of wine every year.

The Chester City Police has 65 officers on the force, which is 25 officers short of being fully staffed. A dozen Delco Parks & Rec police officers are guarding inmates at Chester’s jails so more Chester police officers can patrol the streets. Police are also now working 12-hour shifts.

A group of bicyclists rode from Clifton Heights to Media this morning in honor of the 2,977 people who died after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The bike ride ended at Rose Tree Park, where the community united in mourning on the 23rd anniversary of the attacks.
