Yep. Lots of leaders tell me they want to fix their illiteracy problem, but they don’t want to commit curriculum time to doing it. This is why so much reading catch up in secondary schools fails to scratch the surface. If you’re not ‘all in’ it’s not going to work.

My grandparents (and their parents before them) were working class readers. Libraries were places of empowerment when you spent 12 hours a day down a pit or in a shipyard. Shame on us who have actively encouraged the degradation of reading in our schools and at home.

This should concern everyone in education. Would love to see the stats for SMT - do the majority of them have 15+ years on the clock? Also, as part of the 50% group myself, it would be nice if we were listened to occasionally. We kinda know what we're talking about.

The Nationals were a rickety bridge built between BGE and Higher. Then, instead of fixing the bridge, Higher was tampered with, and there was some fiddling about with BGE. Still didn't make the bridge structurally safe.

The older I get, the more cynical I become. I moan more, and I find myself doing that sighing, tutting thing too. 🙄😠😆 However, I always, always enjoy working with the pupils. Kids are great, and they still give me a reason to do what I do every day. #PedagooFriday

Absolutely nobody from primary school students to distinguished psychologists capitalises a proper noun anymore and it is giving me the fear.

This. We're back a few weeks now in Scotland, and for many, inservce consisted of top-down priorities. It never seems to be focused on ensuring teachers are prepared for excellent teaching and learning. Funny that. 🤔

Aw, this reminds me of Mr Dissent, who used to brighten our day around here with his wit and wisdom. If you see him over on Bluesky, give him a 👋

Working with a great bunch of colleagues can make all the difference in our sometimes beleaguered profession. I count myself lucky to work with such a team. ✨️ #PedagooFriday
