Last year, 1436 criminal court hearings were delayed because there was no barrister to represent one side or the other. Back in 2019, that number was just 71. For Counsel Magazine I ask: Where have all the criminal barristers gone?

The service from Southern has been a joke today. Trains so full that people can’t get on them and station car parks closed with no warning and no alternative. No wonder people choose to drive!

Day in, day out, we see a fifth to a quarter of Crown Court courtrooms standing idle. And yet practitioners are running themselves ragged trying (and failing) to keep up. The backlog grows ever higher, overseen by a government with no remediation plan at all.
