In the most basic terms, reading lessons involve a mixture of reading text and responding to it (i.e. discussing text or producing written responses). And I think that in many (if not most) primary schools the balance between these two things is *way* off. A thread... 🪡

And in my experience, teachers tend to vastly overestimate how much time is spent actually reading in their reading lessons. (I once asked a teaching assistant to track how much time was spent with eyes on text in my reading lessons. It was a lot less than I thought.)

Ian Addison Important but are easily turned into a lethal mutation. For the underlying theory and evidence behind it read Ausubel's work and for a really good summary and application, read Sarah Cottinghatt's book on meaningful learning.

Please don't leave class storytime to videos and audiobooks. My pupils evolve after every book we share together. Relationships changed, ideas put forward, friendships built, opinions challenged, empathy developed, discussions had. It builds a class like nothing else.

This week is OPAL launch week at Penn Wood. The children were so eager and engaged, and there was a tangible buzz in the air on day one. Z bugs, construction, bowling, weaving, chalk and train tracks yesterday - what will today bring?

When it comes to the science of learning, there is one programme that is more closely aligned with its core principles than any other, that has a proven track record of success, and yet it's the one that's least used in mainstream education today.
