Inspired by Rita Dove’s grandparents, Thomas and Beulah—Dove’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of poetry—is a gem. I’d love to discuss these poems in a classroom setting, and I only wish that I’d been assigned this collection in my undergrad poetry workshop, back in the day.

Last night, I binged all six episodes of #ColininBlackandWhite with my white parents who are raising my two Black brothers. The series has engendered rich and necessary discussion, especially regarding parenting. Thanks to Ava DuVernay and Colin Kaepernick for this powerful project.

I caught a screening of The Tragedy of Macbeth on New Year’s Eve, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. One of the best films of 2021 is also this English teacher’s favorite Shakespearean adaptation. Film noir at its best, with a stellar ensemble!

Today, I’m honored to embark on The Search for Founding Black Mothers: a month-long, research-based institute funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities—& hosted by Morgan State—in order to “reckon with curricular and historical erasures of Black women” (NEH Education).
