Today, we highlight an unusual memorial in the English city of Worcester: the ‘Battle of Gheluvelt Memorial Sculpture’. Each plate symbolises two months, with the height reflecting the number of casualties from that period. The picture shows the representations of 1917 and 1918.

110 years ago today a six-kilometre-wide, greenish-yellow gas cloud rolled toward the French lines near Poelkapelle and Bikschote. It was the first large-scale gas attack on the Western Front. #OnThisDay #WWI

In the early hours of April 24, 1915, exactly 110 years ago today, a gas cloud tore a gap in the Canadian lines. The Canadian positions became untenable. Chaos reigned. Artillery support was lacking, and to make matters worse, the Canadian Ross Rifles jammed.

This new diorama shows how many residents left their houses neat and tidy. Their best clothes were hung in the wardrobes and valuable possessions stashed away. Close to Zonnebeke one family even put the dishes under the table, so that they wouldn’t be broken by shelling.

On 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, we’re highlighting the importance of medical care. In the renewed 'I Died in Hell' gallery, you’ll discover how lifesaving aid made all the difference for thousands of wounded soldiers during the Battle of Passchendaele.

After lunch in the town of Zonnebeke, we then headed to the Passchendaele Museum Passchendaele Museum to study the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele in more detail.

On the banks of the Steenbeek there's the Harry Patch Memorial Stone, where the 7th Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry crossed the Steenbeek on 16 August 1917 to launch their attack on the devastated village of Langemark. The stone was donated by Private Harry Patch.

Let's highlight this map of West Flanders commemorative landscape. Notably, each nation was given its own symbol to mark its military cemeteries. However, this nationalisation is a post-war development. The map can be viewed up close in the Echoes of War gallery at the museum.

Underground warfare reached its zenith between 7 and 14 June 1917 with the Battle of Messines. 19 deep mines exploded under German lines. After heavy fighting, the New Zealanders took Messines, while the Irish & British captured Wijtschate. But it did not mark a breakthrough.

This new diorama shows the 'Grand Salon'. The furnishings are based on an original list of furniture and objects from the Gheluvelt Château. During the retreat the British were unable to evacuate all their wounded from the château, which had been set up as a field hospital.

During WWI, William Selkirk, a British soldier from Pelton, England, sent postcards with drawings to his young children. He was a gunner in the 298th Siege Battery, was killed in action on 10 August 1917, and commemorated on the Menin Gate. Today we remember fathers like William.

In the renewed museum, you'll encounter personal stories of soldiers. Martial Yves Delon's story is one of them. He completed his military service with the 77ème régiment d'infanterie. In November 1914 he received a fatal wound to his head from a shell burst - near Nieuwemolen.

Jules Vandenbulcke and his wife Flavie Dochy ran a bakery in the village. Their book of accounts shows that he kept his shop open until the last possible moment. On 20 October 1914, shortly before the order to evacuate came, he sold 7.5 kilograms of flour. #WorldRefugeeDay
