This is interesting! But I’d point out that this is a feature of ML research in much of the physical sciences. We have mechanistic models that can be used as a causal, generative ground truth models & use them to further AI research. That was a message of my NeurIPS2016 keynote

I highly recommend the International High Performance Computing Summer School for grad students working on computational-related projects! ihpcss.org

Absolutely awesome discussion on AI Ethics and the UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳 recommendations from @EmmaR_Bloem at the ICTP Workshop on Machine Learning in Citizen Science. This has been such an enriching week!

Kudos to Davidson College Technology & Innovation . I got locked out of all of my Davidson accounts (password reset issue, my bad) while here in Italy, and they were on the phone with me within 30 seconds. I was back up and running in a coupe of minutes 🙌

I had SO much fun giving the MSU Physics Colloquium last week! The FRIB/MSU scientists are like family at this point, a mix of students I have supervised and scientists who supervised me. And an added surprise of favs from FSU Department of Physics?!? 💯

Shout out to the 17 yo Canadian boy who sat next to me on a train in Italy yesterday. He shared his enthusiastic delight in his first experience overseas with me, pointing out all the small details that were new to him (the trees! The roads!) Sharing that experience was joyful❤️

We've seen some worrisome patterns in the way that members of the press engage with women in tech, the questions they ask and the angles they take. Being proactive folks, we've created a 🤗guide to make sure that doesn't happen! linkedin.com/pulse/rules-pr…

Whoa, impressed by this strongly worded letter from science committee leaders to National Institute of Standards and Technology & White House Office of Science & Technology Policy about the due diligence required for us to properly evaluate AI systems in deployment. Partial list: 1. Transparency about what is actually in OAI models/datasets (ht Stella Biderman) 2. Azure cloud contract transparency--who's licensing GPT, for what use, how much $ 3. Transparency on training/calibration (RLHF etc) costs, w details on labor process + worker pay

🧵 The historic NYT v. OpenAI lawsuit filed this morning, as broken down by me, an IP and AI lawyer, general counsel, and longtime tech person and enthusiast. Tl;dr - It's the best case yet alleging that generative AI is copyright infringement. Thread. 👇
