It is obvious that the title “Physician Associate” misleads patients. Will GMC and Prof Colin R Melville resist changing the name, even if the government accepts the findings of the The Leng review?

I’ve seen a lot of people say The Leng review recommendation of changing Associate back to assistant doesn’t go far enough IMO it is the single most important change and it blows the doors off the entire project as well as asks some very embarrassing questions This is why 🧵

Natalie King stated at the Royal College of Physicians EGM that her trust (SASH NHS Trust) had strict governance and policies around PAs, with timely reviews. Here is evidence to show that not only was the policy not updated since 2020, it allowed for incredibly irresponsible practice.

This is what SASH NHS Trust told journalists covering the Pamela Marking story. 🔴 Failed to disclose that there was no Physician Associate policy for the emergency department 🔴 Claimed PAs work "under the direct supervision of a consultant" – contradicted by their own PA policy

This is ridiculous from GMC & Prof Colin R Melville In the tragic case of Susan Pollitt, the Physician Associate who inserted the ascitic drain misrepresented their competence to the ward team. Also, they had been 'signed off' by a nurse, who was under the impression they were a doctor!

đź””UPDATE: More worrying evidence emerging of unsafe use of Physician Associates by University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Doctors at the trust have been instructed to create a "prescribing rota" to determine who will prescribe and request scans for PAs. Care Quality Commission Source: r/DoctorsUK
