A year on, we know why the Tongan eruption was so violent. It's a wake-up call to watch other submarine volcanoes Shane Cronin School of Environment, The University of Auckland AUT School of Science theconversation.com/a-year-on-we-k⦠via The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand

Day 1/7 - Cyclone Gabrielle nipping at our heals/ knocking down the doors. We are staying dry(ish) and will hit the water tomorrow for our first day of sampling. We will deploy our AUT University Benthic chamber along with NIWA βs eddy covariance landers Blue Economy CRC

Day 2/7 - This morning is looking π. Full steam ahead. Goals for today: setup and deploy AUT University βs benthic lander (X3) and NIWA βs eddy covariance landers. This is the start of our big week out in the Sounds with the Blue Economy CRC

Getting some depth profiles using our RBR maestro CTD (affectionately nicknamed - TWEETY BIRD) with added turbidity, DO, Chl-a, and PAR in Queen Charlotte sound to complement our benthic flux measurements. AUT University NIWA Blue Economy CRC

Today, in addition to our Benthic flux measurements, we are collecting sediment samples and more depth profiles using TWEETY BIRD (RBR Maestro ) to characterise our study site. AUT University NIWA Blue Economy CRC #mudmatters #sediments #oceanography
