Short thread: The schools settlement: from a baseline of £64.8bn in 2025-6, schools spending for next 4 yrs will be £67 bn in 26-7; £68.4bn in 27-8; £69.5bn in 28-9. An average cash increase of 2.36% over the three years. 1/2

There has been a lower 3 yr settlement: the period 2014-18 averaged 1.86%. But that came with 1% teacher pay awards in all three years. This is a more-than-tight settlement and can only be afforded if the costs of the high needs block are brought under control very quickly. 2/2

I am in total awe of Madeline Grant ‘s parliamentary sketches. I never thought to read anyone as witty as Frank Johnson again. Comparing Rachel Reeves to “a bollard in a wig” - it’s like the old days. spectator.co.uk/article/the-sp…

My thoughts today are with all those who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire and also with their families and loved ones who, eight years on, continue to face many challenges but do so with their customary dignity and strength.

Thinking of all those who were lost or who lost loved ones in the Grenfell fire 8 years on, and of the firefighters and emergency services who were there. Do see Sir Steve McQueen's Grenfell film if you can. tate.org.uk/whats-on/natio…

Rod Liddle is a 21st century Jonathan Swift. Nobody writing today better draws out the pernicious absurdities and logic-defying pieties of our broken British state.

In parliamentary terms this was probably the best the Leader of the Opposition has been: passionate, coruscating and unambiguously in the right. It’s just a shame it took such shameful behaviour from the government to bring it out. ✍️ Madeline Grant spectator.co.uk/article/kemi-w…
