Wow - incredible omega bands last night over Fairbanks, check out the dawn-side aurora around 245 am local time this morning... not sure I have seen a better example of these structures. Amazing imagery here.

I plan to eventually transfer my website from my old OU host to a separate server, but in the meantime, I wrote a detailed blog post about the challenges of forecasting Tropical Storm Sara and what went wrong: arctic.som.ou.edu/tburg/blog/pos…

Super #Typhoon #MANYI's eye was No. 10 for me this year—a single-season record. MAN-YI was most ferocious storm I've witnessed since DORIAN 5 years ago. Feel great about the chase but I'm badly burned out. Need to not chase for a few months. Career total: 80 eyewalls/59 eyes.

MSNBC reports that the backpack found in Central Park, believed to be from the United Healthcare CEO killer, did not contain a gun. Instead, they found Monopoly money and a jacket.

Nationwide snowfall is now 58% of normal, season-to-date. It ranks 16th out of the last 17 years. Only 2023 (last year) was less snowy to-date, being 38% of normal. Some big storms in the new year will be needed to counterbalance the growing snow deficit.

A list of PSAs as we await a predicted major (G3) geomagnetic storm this week: 1. The CMEs could impact anytime tonight or tomorrow. The CME may hit tomorrow during the day, too, and completely fizzle out before nighttime. Models only get you so far...

You probably heard about the epic winter storm along the gulf coast yesterday. Well, here is a snowfall analysis from that storm. All yellow/orange areas are 6-12" of accumulation. As a comparison, the largest daily snowfall in Billings so far this winter is 3.5". #mtwx

The Gulf Coast blizzard created some remarkable seasonal snowfall anomalies - some areas have now experienced well over 1000% of their seasonal average! Other oddities include much of the Gulf Coast having *more snow* than parts of the Plains and coastal Northeast.

My goodness what a sunrise in #Pittsburgh this morning. One of the best of the year, and that's saying something given all of the amazing mornings we've had. There was color in every single part of the sky, and you can even see the clouds glowing right were the sun is coming up.
