I will discuss the incredibly sobering, deeply upsetting, and infuriating (because we could have avoided so much of this, if scientists were listened to) 2021 State of the Environment Report, and what must urgently change, on SBS News tonight.

Given the grim State of the Environment report released today by Tanya Plibersek, perhaps it's finally time to increase financial support for the people you need to fix these problems? PhD students in Aus earn below minimum wage to complete ~4 years of skilled work. Sound fair?

Well done ourANU 👏 Despite difficult financial situations they are prioritising raising the PhD stipend by ~18% to $34k/yr. University of Tasmania and other uni’s please match this much needed initiative. The planned 3.5% increase for 2023 RTP is a pay cut and puts unnecessary stress on PhDs

To add to Lisa Craw amazing stats - ourANU have raised PhD stipends by $5k/yr despite expecting a deficit while University of Tasmania reports a ‘small’ $4.6m surplus. Very grateful to University of Tasmania for easing the pressure slightly with a $1k one off payment but more needs to be done NTEU Tas Division
