Understanding COVID19 Numbers. 1. Exponential Growth 2. Lagging Indicators 3. Confirmed Case Count is Not a Robust Metric 4. Exponential Growth + Lagging Indicators 100 deaths on April 2 means you currently have 12,800 infections that will cause death langeman.net/posts/understa…

I have growing pessimism about how well Ontario is doing in #COVID19 fight and the quality of numbers being reported. Along with lag and under-reporting, the daily percent positive for test results was above 10% for the first time yesterday. observablehq.com/@mattlangeman/… #COVID19ON

Not an encouraging trend in Ontario #COVID19 testing numbers. Rolling 5-day average for percent positive continues upward trend. Ontario needs more testing! #COVID19ON

Evaluating new software tech is hard. Things move fast! Want something that will stick long term? Look at the quality of documentation. In 2006 I picked Django over several options. 14 years later it is not the hottest thing out there, but has definitely aged well.

Many dashboards are vanity projects. Look at these beautiful charts! Now we are data-driven! Beware of the scenario where the primary goal is to satisfy a person who is not a primary user of the dashboard. A dashboard can look amazing when in reality, it is completely useless.

Some simple questions to avoid vanity dashboards. Who is going to look at the dashboard? What should happen when the person looks at the dashboard? What is the action taken, decision made, or perspective changed? #dashboards #dataviz

Data does not speak for itself. When you create a dashboard, you inherently make decisions that determine the story being told.
