This season we take a look back at 30 years ago. The 1993 Oneida Indians were 2-0 after victories against the Estill County Engineers and the Taft Tigers. Oneida would open region play with the team picked to finish last in the region, the Wartburg Bulldogs.

Wartburg had fallen in their season opener to the Coalfield Yellowjackets 7-6. Oneida’s defense had yet to surrender a score in 1993, and that trend would continue. The Bulldogs were held to 43 yards on 18 rushes – averaging just 2.4 yards per carry.

The Indian secondary limited Wartburg to 5 of 20 passing for 71 yards. The first three games saw Oneida’s defense allowing no points and limiting their opponents to 112 yards per game. Oneida had four interceptions and four recovered fumbles through three games.

Pete Shoemaker and Daniel King would intercept Wartburg in the 2nd half. The Indians offense was heavy on the ground game which averaged 6 yds per carry against the Dogs while the pass game was in form with 94 yards and a TD pass of 59 yards from Jay Seals to Josh Thompson.

Coach Jimmy May is in his 3nd year as head coach of Oneida. His overall head coaching record is 16-12 with one no contest win due to COVID. Week 5 will be Greenback in Oneida, TN and is game #925 of Oneida Football. Oneida football has 591 wins, 321 losses, and 12 ties all-time.
