Are you sowing enough canola seeds? Here’s some results derived from an GRDC project that could help adjust seeding rates (kg/ha) based on small, medium or large seed size. Hope it helps.

Ever wondered if MAP fertiliser toxicity was worse with smaller canola seed? These GRDC results suggest no difference, however the improved establishment from larger seed helped compensate for some of the losses. GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY GOA Barry Haskins

Using a single disc seeder? On average, there was a 17%, 28% & 37% reduction in canola establishment as MAP increased from 50, 100 and 150kg/ha compared to Nil MAP. Be aware of your SBU%. GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

Results highlighting the benefit of sowing large diameter seed as canola seed depth increases. Key points * biggest gains in est% came via removing <1.6mm seed * large seed = larger cotyledons = quicker biomass production GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY GOA Barry Haskins

How fast are you sowing canola? Previous GRDC paddock survey identified that establishment could increase by 16% by reducing sowing speed. Just another factor to consider/weigh up GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

What’s the critical soil moisture content to establish canola? Been using evaporation covers, irrigation and rain-out shelters to evaluate moisture and temperature effects on est%. Great GRDC project lead by Andrew_Fletcher . Stay tuned for results. CSIRO @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

Disc seeders - ensure adequate seed slot closure in wet conditions. These GRDC results illustrate reduced canola est% presumably due to poor seed slot closure. Sometimes might be best to leave it another day to dry out. @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY CSIRO

We are hosting a canola establishment field walk Wednesday 29 May, 9.30 am at Ganmain. The focus will be on managing variable soils, especially sodic soils. Great opportunity to hear experts in their field and see research in a challenging environment. bit.ly/CanEstab

Come along to an GRDC canola establishment field walk on Wednesday 26 June at Canowindra. Should be some good discussion regarding all things canola establishment (incl agronomic/mechanical & pest ). Hope to see you there. @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY GOA CSIRO whatbugsyou

Using shelters & irrigation to adjust seedbed moisture & to ensure dry conditions post sowing. Questions are: what’s the critical moist % to establish canola, & can seed be placed deeper if surface too dry? Really looking foward to these GRDC results👍CSIRO NSW Agronomy

The team from GOA invite you along to the 2025 Central West @grdc NGN forums. 🤔Have your say on the issues that keep you awake at night that might help guide GRDC investments in YOUR area with YOUR levy $$$$. 🧐Hear the latest research from YOUR backyard with farmer-ready

Great day at Tottenham yesterday, and thanks GRDC North for the opportunity to present. For anybody interested, there’s also a new GRDC funded App developed by CSIRO called ‘Summer weed tool’…worth checking out this summer.
