Are you sowing enough canola seeds? Here’s some results derived from an GRDC project that could help adjust seeding rates (kg/ha) based on small, medium or large seed size. Hope it helps.

Ever wondered if MAP fertiliser toxicity was worse with smaller canola seed? These GRDC results suggest no difference, however the improved establishment from larger seed helped compensate for some of the losses. GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY GOA Barry Haskins

Using a single disc seeder? On average, there was a 17%, 28% & 37% reduction in canola establishment as MAP increased from 50, 100 and 150kg/ha compared to Nil MAP. Be aware of your SBU%. GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

How fast are you sowing canola? Previous GRDC paddock survey identified that establishment could increase by 16% by reducing sowing speed. Just another factor to consider/weigh up GRDC North @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

What’s the critical soil moisture content to establish canola? Been using evaporation covers, irrigation and rain-out shelters to evaluate moisture and temperature effects on est%. Great GRDC project lead by Andrew_Fletcher . Stay tuned for results. CSIRO @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

Disc seeders - ensure adequate seed slot closure in wet conditions. These GRDC results illustrate reduced canola est% presumably due to poor seed slot closure. Sometimes might be best to leave it another day to dry out. @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY CSIRO
