This day 44 years ago I started my medical career as a pre-registration House Officer at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport . Qualified from Manchester Medical School after six years with no debt. Long hours and poor pay but great support from the ‘Firm’ structure.

Today I carried out my last ever operation after 33 years as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. An honour and a privilege to have worked with such tremendous people and patients.Loyalty, skill, kindness, dedication, trust, professionalism and humour. Absolutely humbling.

It’s nearly 8 years since the Charnley Building was opened at Wrightington Hospital by the now Mcr Mayor Andy Burnham thousands of patients have been treated here and it’s still looking as good as it did then WWL NHS

62 years ago today Sir John Charnley began this story. Millions of patients have benefited from his pioneering work. Today he and the hospital have been honoured with a Blue Plaque.

2/2 This was the first THR to use UHMWPE and marked the crucial turning point in the history of hip surgery, enabling Charnley to operate on the hips that had failed with Teflon. Between ‘62 and ‘68 he did 2500 “LFAs” with no revision
