I’ve been advocating for Black country artists for the past 5 years and there is still a long way to go for these artists post Cowboy Carter.

If I were over the #BETAwards I would’ve invited all of the Black country artists featured on Cowboy Carter and then some to at least take the red carpet. Why was Tanner and Shaboozey the only two there?

Having two Black country artists perform at an award show when there is not even a country music category is …. interesting.

The reality is , Black media needs to do a better job at supporting Black artists in non traditional genres like country , folk, rock n roll etc .

If BET or any other Black award shows wants to have artists like Shaboozey and Tanner perform at least have categories so they have opportunities to be nominated AND win. It’s not that hard.

I would love to be apart of the conversations with BET on having a country , jazz and rock category for future BET awards. If June is #BlackMusicMonth I think Black artists across all genres.

Black country artists being invited and performing at the BET Awards is a small step in a better direction but for them to truly feel “seen” there needs to be a country nominee category . Y’all will see the difference.

The future of the music industry for Black artists in genres like country , folk , rock etc is so uncertain based on what Black media seems as “popular”. Hopefully they realize all music is Black music.

This also goes for other genres like rock . Lenny Kravitz doesn’t get honored at any Black award shows nor gets enough praise in Black media for his contributions in music . I think if Black award shows expands their nomination categories more artists will feel “seen”.
