Currently writing an article on learned helplessness. Its experience by individuals point to failures in academia, parenting, and structures where so much trust is placed on authority figures. Allow failure. Cultivate resilience, not perfectionism. #MentalHealthMatters

Repeat after me: Neglecting myself doesn't make me a better or more committed academic. I *must* take care of myself, too. OpenAcademics #PhDlife #AcademicTwitter

In grad school, I questioned whether I truly loved science. Now that I'm looking for opportunities outside of #academia, I realized I DO love science. I did NOT love the power dynamics, systemic discrimination, and toxic #burnout culture of academia. #AcademicMentalHealth

At least 1% of me is pursuing a career in science to up the game in the aesthetic and clarity of scientific diagrams. Iโ€™m really tired of the convoluted clipart. #artistsinSTEM

The longer I work in psychiatry, the more & more I'm reminded that poverty is one of the most harmful factors (if not the most harmful factor) affecting peoples' mental health.

True story: when I was a student, I experienced food insecurity. My application for a hardship fund, however, was rejected & I was referred for counseling. Shocked, I rejected the decision from the medical school on the grounds no amount of counseling would fill my empty stomach.

The US spends way too much on medical care because we spend not nearly enough on the basic social care that is the backbone of functional public health systems, and what we do allocate to that generally goes through neoliberal privatization schemes that are programmed to fail.

Intriguing paper in this week's Science: a new, much cheaper approach for MRI scanning It's an MRI scanner that uses a 0.05 Tesla magnet (vs. the current 1.5 - 3 T) and operates at a fraction of the cost (~$22,000 for the hardware), time (<10 minutes), and noise of a current
