Matt Bennett So ridiculous. James Ryan is a great leader. This administration is continually trying to exert political control over institutions. Meanwhile, they are silent on the presidents of college who actively engage in fraud and predatory behavior.

It’s politically negligent that the Association of American University Professors doesn’t have a PAC like other interest groups. Scores of Harvard professors already have pledged 10%(!) of their salaries to help Harvard fight the Trump admin. Imagine that nationally #Harvard #UVA

The tragic fall of #UVa’s Jim Ryan is yet another indication that the Trump administration’s war on higher ed will not abate. Defensive lawsuits are good, but not enough. Time for higher ed to hit back and use participatory democracy to defeat those who would destroy it. #Harvard

My big regret from my time working on teacher prep at the fed level is not pushing harder on curricular change. ED is prohibited by law from attacking curriculum (not that the Trump admin cares about such niceties), but NSF isn’t. That’s the lever to push. nctq.org/research-insig…

More and more folks are suggesting elite colleges embrace ⁦an⁩ “abundance agenda” to self-mitigate the effects of the endowment tax. 🤔 ⁦Ezra Klein⁩ ⁦Derek Thompson⁩ ⁦Matthew Yglesias⁩ ⁦⁦Paul @glastris.bsky.social GlastrisHilary Burns⁩ ⁦⁦ bostonglobe.com/2025/07/23/met…

Still waiting on the Trump administration to declare the legacy preference an unlawful violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. It carries just as much if not more of a disparate impact as the DEI policies the Trump administration continues to attack and declare unlawful.

The USDE downsizing story has dominated education news. Here are four education stories that are way more important: - the student literacy crisis - attendance, enrollment, and closings - student behavior, bullying, & predatory staff - private school choice quality

No matter who he fires or hires, Trump can’t lie to you about what your groceries cost or whether you have a job or not. He can’t order the markets to go up. Just because he doesn’t like the disastrous results of his economic policies, that doesn’t mean they’re not real.

The Early Decision process for college admissions limits price competition for wealthier students and chance of admission for those who need financial aid, not to mention the added stress for students it creates. A new antitrust lawsuit seeks to blow it up. Good riddance.

It’s not just Democrats that have called for an end to the legacy preference. Republican Senator Todd Young⁩ has called for the Trump admin to extend its merit in higher ed admissions agenda to the legacy preference as well. See also ⁦John Kennedy.⁩ apnews.com/article/trump-…

“Last year a group of researchers published a study…in which they surveyed leaders in 30 fields, including law, media, politics and so on. They found…54% of them went to the same 34 elite schools.” — This is why fairness in college admissions matters. nytimes.com/2025/08/14/opi…

In education and beyond, Democrats need to offer real solutions to that which rightly fuels the rage of populist sentiment. As long as we’re just against Trump without offering real, lasting solutions to the ways in which the deck is stacked against working people, we will lose.
