Birmingham's authorities dine out, admittedly on a one dimensional version of, the city's culture. But it often exists in spite of those in gilded halls where decisions gets made. Andy Hamilton soared over obstacles placed in front of him - and took others along with him.

A Jamaican immigrant he became a "Brummie" falling in love with his adopted home. Working hard, raising a large family, helping others, teaching, opening a school, raising the bar, all while playing a sorrowful, danceable jazz (the music he loved).
