An awful decision if so. A policy which has had a massive negative effect on child poverty and health inequality and was introduced only to placate a campaign about benefit scroungers that was dramatically overstated even before current cost of living crisis.

The #TwoChildLimit - one of the most brutal policies of our times - affects over 80 000 children in Scotland alone, pushing up to 15 000 into poverty. Across the UK 1 in 10 children are affected. ALL political leaders must commit to scrapping it. cpag.org.uk/policy-and-cam…

Key point on the two-child limit: it's set to become more painful as the policy fully rolls out. The poorest working-age households are currently £780 a year poorer because of it, but if the policy were fully rolled-out (as it will be in 2035), they would be £1,310 worse off.

The Commons has just voted to remove the Bishop of Manchester's amendment, which would have capped the amount of time a child can be locked up for immigration purposes. Government whipped their MPs to reject it, by 300 to 208. #Illegal

Fairly depressing political week. Labour wouldn’t change 2 child welfare cap, still maybe put ppl seeking asylum on barges, & the rope tightens around ‘low value’ (monetary value) degrees. And we are apparently largely ok with incarcerating migrant children/families again 🤦‍♀️

Beyond the nastiness & terrible impact of the two child limit itself (& therefore the disappointment that it may be around even longer), I think there are three deeper reasons why Labour's position has caused so much concern among those working on poverty & social security...🧵

Everyone knows creating images of beautiful streets of housing isn't the same as creating beautiful new streets of actual houses right?

A sobering take on the British propensity to eschew real policy choices. British politicians are not the only ones having caught the distraction disease, though. ⁦Torsten Bell⁩. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

With this degree of lack of confidence in the government's plans to reduce channel crossings it's time for a fresh approach. The hostile environment strategy is not working. Let's try safe routes and fast and fair asylum assessments.

Trilled to stumble across ‘Traces: Stories of Migration’ at Bow Arts today. Despite how different our paths have been I always find familiarity in the stories of other women who migrated to London’s East end.

The Rwanda policy being scrapped is very welcome decision - but the task of rebuilding our asylum system to meet the challenges of this century is immense. The The Church of England will keep calling for an effective system that treats people with dignity, prevents dangerous
