We talk about dfe, or Ofsted initiatives making work for people, but in my experience the most stressful & demanding thing in schools is other people. Whether SLT, or other management, it is their interpretation or understanding (often wrong) that hits people the hardest.

Our new AHT suggests a visit before she starts in July. Of course! How about the 19th, she says. May or June, I say. Silence. It’s the 2nd June today, she says. And I laugh, ha ha ha, of course it is,I knew that. But I know from the silence she’s wondering about her life choices.

It always amazes me that the boys who cause you the most stress, drain most of your energy, waste most of your time, are the biggest pains in the arse and make me throw my head back and sigh loudly when they are brought to me again, are the ones that I worry about the most.

The change of dynamic is amazing on a school, even a big school, when one or two particular individual children are away.

Y1 boy comes in holding his knee. I've been kicked in the nose, he says. So why are you holding your knee, I ask. Because it hurts, he says. So where did he kick you, I ask. In the nose, he says. I sigh, then look. You're fine, I say, you'll be fine ...

It’s a good job kids (especially Y5/6 boys at this time of year) have such brilliant role models to follow in professional football, otherwise their behaviour might be fucking dreadful. They are what they see. Diving, whining, crying, arguing….a normal premiership match, I guess

At the orthodontist with Rudi. The chap is working away in his mouth with pliers and strange looking scissors. Can you put a bit of wire in his mouth that means it really hurts him when he speaks, I ask, preferably making it bleed. I can hear Rudi sighing from here.

Saw Tom Sherrington this morning, he really is rather good. I was sorry to leave early but we had a bit of a thing back at school. I also made an origami chicken/swan/badger from my napkin.
