On "aging out": Hill: Youth frequently leave without documents and without a plan for next steps and permanent housing, so they end up homeless. Hopkins: Philadelphia county needs to do a better job of addressing the needs of youth in the system -- other counties do.

Tobar: Homeless/LGBTQ+ youth often stand out, draw attention, draw police attention. They end up in the CJ system. For survival crimes. But they are WHOLE PEOPLE, intersectional people. "They have the same issues" as anyone else in that situation, with the added surveillance.

According to Tobar: 62% -- SIXTY-TWO PERCENT -- of homeless #LGBTQ+ youth have attempted suicide. Hopkins adds: Also 7x -- SEVEN TIMES -- more likely to be victims of hate crimes. #YouthJustice #FromSomeToAll

How can the system improve? Tobar: Philly Homes 4 Youth Coalition is making progress! Provide resources for families, keep youth there! Hopkins: Explicit laws/policies to protect youth and LGBTQ+ individuals -- PA isn't one of the 13 states that has those protections. Get them.

Sounds like our panelists really agree on one major point: The system isn't a parent -- it is, at most, a caretaker. More than changing the system, we should be making it unnecessary. Keep youth with their families. Give their families the resources to raise and support them.

Our final panel of the day is about to begin! "We Can Be Both: Time for Lawyers To Be Activists" w/ Ashley "Kris" Henderson, @DrexelKline Prof. @dsc250, Karen Hoffmann, and Karla #Activism #LibertyAndJustice #FromSomeToAll #StudentJustice #SocialJustice

Highlights from our final spoken word piece, from Stephen: "To be a survivor is to be anything but seen." "Worth more dead than alive, some say I'm a son of hardships." "Brown skin is anything but timeless." "Unbent, proud, strong, waiting to get hammered into submission."

"Do our ethics begin and end at the law, or with the Model Rules of Professional Responsiblity? Do we owe more to our clients?" Time to find out. #StudentJustice #SocialJustice #LibertyAndJustice

Mandatory court surcharges are not supposed to be punitive, but their impact is to hurt only those who are too poor to pay, while providing little to no benefit to our justice system. The New York Legislature needs to eliminate these antiquated surcharges. bit.ly/2tczUyV

Cohen, talking about recently filed abortion rights case: "This is seeing something, seeing a risk, the entrenched system we have to overcome..." That effort "is what this kind of activist lawyering takes."

Henderson, discussing their own activism, highlighted the (shared) concern about getting arrested for demonstration -- from decarceration protests, the Occupy movement, or "Die-In"s -- and what that could mean for a career in the law.

Hoffman mentions a case in which attorneys were sanctioned and personally fined for "frivolous" legal arguments after arguing for a right to self-goverment. Cohen: "A lot of activism involves risk... and you have to figure out what tolerance [for that risk] you have."

Being an activist is about choosing when to be an activist. Walk a line between serving your client by breaking down the system and serving your client by bending to the system.

Final question: (1) Would you go to law school, given the chance to do it all over? --> Unanimous yes, for varying reasons. (2) And what can law schools to better for activist students? --> Teach movement law. Be diverse. Open up to different views.
