It started life as Taylor's Mill some time before 1790. After a fire in 1818 it would become the Rotunda Tavern/Hotel, the contents of which were for sale on 27th Sept 1870 prior to demolition

The Queen Victoria Monument and its famous appendage was unveiled on 27th September 1906

To mark the occasion a ball was held in the Town Hall on 27th September. One of the guests was 97 year old Mrs. Lineacre, who had attended the opening of the original infirmary some 75 years earlier.
