Dom Phillips, a superb journalist, regular contributor to The Guardian, and great friend, is missing in Javari Valley of Amazon after death threats to his indigenista companion, Bruno Pereira, who is also missing. Calling on Brazilian authorities to urgently launch search operation.

Some exciting news for me for 2024. I move from the Observer's news desk to editing the Guardian's Seascape, all about the state of our oceans. I am working alongside excellent reporter Karen McVeigh but will also be looking for freelance contributions from around the world

It's 20 years tomorrow since the tragic death of the cocklepickers in Cumbria. Karen McVeigh spent some time up there to examine the lasting impact ‘It’s going to finish the village’: how Morecambe Bay’s tragedy changed cocklepickers’ lives for ever theguardian.com/environment/20…

I put this supplement together for this weekend’s paper. It’s primarily about how to protect our coastline, with lots of ideas for projects to get involved in. But also best beaches as picked by people like Steve Backshall and Michael Morpurgo

Who is driving the boom in cruise holidays? The older generation? That’s what I thought - but I was wrong. I loved writing this with the excellent Clea Skopeliti.bsky.social Thanks to all who spoke to us for it theguardian.com/environment/20…
