Come (virtually) join UChicago’s E&E DEI PhD students in a casual discussion about applying to graduate school! Open to everyone interested in pursuing graduate school in Ecology and Evolution. Please share with those who might be interested! 🍃🧪🧬

A new preprint by @laurabarthm went online today (arxiv:2311.03187). It answers a simple question that has a surprisingly #complex answer -- one that involves #networks and an infinite sequence of structural phase transitions ...

At this point I just need to admit I do lots of marine things and memorize the coordinates of Cape Hatteras and Pt Conception.

Was there an option to mount an iphone on a mac to show what you're writing on paper via Zoom? Swear I remember Apple touting this facny stereoscopic hack in 2020 (though also feel it may have been killed since)

I procrastinate writing some papers for years until I have an exciting story... Then after I start writing I can't stop for the night. Intertwining the ideas and evidence into a simple story is somehow really stimulating. (imposter syndrome disclaimer: I don't write many papers)

We tend to use simple models to describe regime shifts in nature. But ecosystems, brains or cancers are built upon many interacting units. How does multistability emerge in complex systems? now in Ecology Letters ! Sonia Kefi shorturl.at/ADFP4

How does complexity arise in (macro)evolution? Is it a continuous or a stepwise process? What about hierarchies? Check this new Trends in Ecology & Evolution review led by Sergi Valverde🌍(under a blue sky) on the eldredge and Gould's Theory of Punctuated Equilibrium across scales. cell.com/trends/ecology…

For those following the ongoing saga of Priyanga Amarasekare—a major update. She speaks out, addressing all charges! This would make for a dramatic novel or Netflix series. But no, it’s the life of our brilliant and deeply caring colleague and friend pamarasekare.org

This week, embattled UCLA EEB Professor Priyanga Amarasekare faces additional disciplinary hearings. She offers a thorough defense of herself--and transparency on the history of charges & outcomes in her cases--here: pamarasekare.org

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Just a reminder that Native Americans are not a historical people, that we are still here, and that the biggest injustice in U.S. history—the dispossession of land from Indigenous nations largely by fraudulent treaties—remains ongoing
