With an out-of-state petitioner angling to mandate prayer in South Dakota schools, some consider it a misuse of the state ballot measure system. That includes the state ACLU chapter. sdpb.org/politics/2024-…

This is absolutely devastating. Amber Thurman waited 20 hours for doctors to finally operate on her spreading infection, sinking blood pressure, and failing organs. By then, it was too late. If she had access to timely care, she would still be here. Abortion bans kill people.

Amber Nicole Thurman was killed by Georgia's abortion ban. She died in a hospital, surrounded by medical providers who could have saved her life. This is what abortion bans do. propublica.org/article/georgi…

The North Dakota Legislature’s interim Education Committee has been studying “school choice” models, such as voucher systems where the state helps pay for a student’s private education. 🧵 1/9

NEW REPORT‼️ The data shows there were more pregnancy-related prosecutions in the first year after Dobbs than in ANY prior year. Why? State actors are emboldened, putting pregnant people under INCREASED surveillance and making a dire situation even worse. pregnancyjusticeus.org/wp-content/upl…

Federal law prohibits blanket purges of voters 90 days before an election. SD conducted one of these purges a mere 28 days before the election and then bragged about it in a press release. ACLU of South Dakota demands these wrongfully purged voters be immediately reinstated.

While the state can make inquiries into specific voters with evidence to support its claims that an individual is not legally eligible to vote, it cannot enact blanket purges based on potentially inaccurate databases this close to the election. dakotanewsnow.com/2024/10/08/acl…

BREAKING: We are headed to the Supreme Court with Lambda Legal this fall to fight for trans youth in the case U.S. v. Skrmetti, where Chase Strangio will argue on behalf of our clients. Chase is one of our nation's foremost legal experts on the rights of transgender people.

As co-director of the ACLU LGBTQ Project, Chase has spent years advocating for trans families in challenges to bans on medical care, arguing the issue four times before federal appeals courts, more than any attorney in the country.

SD legislators are in Pierre debating a bill to require posting of the 10 commandments in every classroom while non-profits that have real violence prevention programs are shutting down due to extremist federal policies. State leaders should serve the people of this state.

🚨 This is HUGE! SD is the *only* state in the nation where an ingestion charge = a felony. It's time for us to step into the 21st century and stop demonizing folks struggling with substance use disorder in our state. Call your Representatives and urge them to pass SB 83!

This has been many years in the making and the impact will be immense. Addiction is a public health problem and treating it like one is better for people and for communities. Thank you to every legislator who voted in support of repealing felony ingestion!
