Historic Preservation Month, Demolished Landmark #8: With the historic selection of the first Pope from the U.S., it seems timely to mention the 1998 demolition of the 174-year-old chapel at St. Joseph-Holy Cross Cemetery. Indy Star, 4/16/98; Indy News, 4/25/98

April 15 marked the 160th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination. I'll be on an encore Hoosier History Live Saturday at noon (88.7) to tell the stories of the surprising large number of Hoosiers who claimed to have witnessed the tragic event. historicindianapolis.com/indianapolis-c…

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was dedicated OTD in 1902. As part of the ceremony, elderly members of every regiment that left Indiana from 1861 to 1865 surrounded the tattered flags they once carried in the Civil War and marched to the Circle.

The Guaranty Building on the SW quadrant of the Circle was nearly vacant in 1996 and faced demolition before it was purchased at auction and restored. Its neighbor was not so lucky. The building that housed White’s Cafeteria was razed in 1970 following a devastating fire.

It’s end of an era in Kokomo when WIOU goes off the air on May 31. Like many Kokomoans, I grew up listening to 1350 AM until the advent of FM. I especially remember sitting in the kitchen on snowy mornings waiting to hear the magic words “All Kokomo schools will be closed today.”

Vice President Charles Fairbanks died this week in 1918, and the story of the Meridian Street lot where his home once stood includes prostitutes, presidents and a shady cancer doctor. Here's the dirt on this particular piece of land. indypolitan.com/post/from-vice…

OTD in 1820, three men appointed by the legislature sat at this table in John McCormick's cabin and chose a small pioneer settlement as the site of the future state capital. The table where Indy was born was stored in the Statehouse basement for decades, but has since disappeared

The administration claims that the steep reduction in State Library funding was a "difficult" decision made at the last minute to adjust for the shortfall. This is not true. The budget as introduced in January cut the library's annual budget by nearly 30%. indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/06/11/50-…
