The role of community organisations – Lepta Community is an excellent example that shows the success of #localorganisations who will often reach the vulnerable youth on the ground. Often times, marginalised youth are excluded from mainstream programs.

Youth are committed – the trainings led by Lepta Community require youth to be committed and consistent. They show up for their classes, they are active in their projects, and the team has countless of success stories from program alumni. #commitment

We need to invest more in youth development – many youth programs are often activity based and short lived. But not for Lepta Community. From the onset, Jking designed the program with the goal of achieving long-term impact. We need to invest more to achieve #realimpact.

Moving the #knowledge to #practice – “A lot of people have knowledge, a lot of people have gone to the university and done a lot of research, they have been in board rooms, building documents and policies”. Practising what we have learned makes all the difference.#learnbydoing

Contextualise learning and keep up to date with new skills in the industry. All of the learning sessions held through Lepta Community have been tailored to fit the different groups of youth being supported. Training has to meet the needs of youth.

Role models – when it seems like something cannot be done, it is good to have examples of others who have done it. “I will continue being an example and a light, a source, and an anchor for the young people in Mathare and many other parts of the world who need inspiration.”

One important aspect of a leader is that he/she needs to be developed and to be led. Not because of weakness or emptiness but to sustain his/her leadership. We spent the last two days as leaders going through a process that feeds us so we can continue with the work we do.
