Been working on implementing Howie Hua Tip of the Day. Yesterday’s tip: Be curious. This led to a contextual conversation: Why are some grain bins made of corrugated steel rather than straight steel? Corrugated steel increases surface area but not volume. Why this design?

Math 8/9: I have been looking for lots of 'real life' examples for surface area of a circle. Not many exist so I built a task around the world's biggest cookie. immaculatebaking.com/the-worlds-big… Make Math Moments Prairie Valley School Division Vibank Regional School Sask Math Teachers

Math 8/9: I also used this blog post from Mark Chubb entitled, "Is This 'Real World'?" After the world's biggest cookie problem, we worked on determining the approximate surface area of this Pi mosaic. SMTS Prairie Valley School Division Vibank Regional School

Going through my notes from #SUM2024 and found this quote from Howie Hua: "Rather than saying what standard do I want my students to learn, ask yourself what experience do I want my students to have?" I want my SS to feel PROUD! Sask Math Teachers Prairie Valley School Division

Math 8/9: I asked Ss to watch the following clip and create their 'Tip of the Day' from it. P.S. The connections to thinking flexibly in math are unreal in this video! Howie Hua Sask Math Teachers can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%…

Math 9: Ss are working on a data project that examines cell phone usage. If you’re willing to contribute, please indicate your average daily screen time last week as well as your average daily pickups and notifications. TIA! Sask Math Teachers SMYA Prairie Valley School Division

Math 8/9: I shared graphs from Jonathan Haidt book “The Anxious Generation” to simultaneously teach Ss about data & graphing and mental health. Then, Jenna Laib turned some of the graphs into slow reveal graphs! Check them out: slowrevealgraphs.com/resources-for-… Prairie Valley School Division Sask Math Teachers

I have been reading the book pictured below. The following quote seems so appropriate for math education: “More often than not, there are no right answers, just different perspectives. The more perspectives we can learn to see, the greater our understanding becomes.” 💙

I have been combing my Twitter posts looking for content connected to SEL and math and then I came across this. How privileged am I to have had this influence on this student? #iteachmath

I have been reflecting on this balanced instructional framework recently. I created this about 5 years ago. It's important to reflect on it to see what aspects of it still hold true for myself as an educator to help me distill what really matters when teaching math. Sask Math Teachers

Math 8/9: Kicked off the year with a growth mindset lesson. Read “The Most Magnificent Thing” by Ashley Spires & created edible neurons inspired by BegBorrowAndTeach!. Discussed how neurons fire when we make mistakes & that we learn from mistakes as well. Sask Math Teachers Prairie Valley School Division

WAM 10: Interesting conversation as we debriefed Let’s Make Squares puzzle from Sarah Carter. Talked about the difference between cheating and learning from others, trial and error and how to navigate frustration as we experience productive struggle. Math 8/9: Ss tackled "Cycling Squares" from NRICH maths Ss place the numbers so that any 2 numbers adjacent to one another equal a perfect square. Great for all teams because teams could make it more or less challenging based on how many numbers they included. Prairie Valley School Division
