Melissa is absolutely perfect — in the worst possible way. Achieving a storm of this magnitude using only air, water and heat requires absolute meteorological perfection. Tragically, that perfection is deadly. Update on Melissa:

Do you see all that purple? That corresponds to incredibly cold cloud tops around minus-80 degrees Celsius (minus-112 degrees Fahrenheit). Clouds have to be about 52,000 feet tall (or greater) to be that cold. The fact that Melissa has such a tall, cold CDO, or Central Dense

This is it. Eyewall now onshore in Jamaica and likely catastrophic damage occurring. Communications are starting to fail so we may not see a lot of images for a while. #Melissa

I was in devastated Black River #Jamaica last night (in search of a new wheel for my car). The city is a shocking sight. But I'm happy to report the situation was under control: police & military all over; aid trucks everywhere giving out food, water, & care packages; mobile

If you have a very low-latitude aurora observation from tonight, please record your exact time and rough location and DO NOT DELETE your photo. These observations will be important for scientific research. Comment below if you have a very low-latitude aurora sighting.

Absolutely love the timeline cleanse of nothing but Northern Lights on my feed tonight. No stupid fights or arguments just beauty. I love it.

Immense planning and technical precision was required for this absolutely preposterous (but real) view: I captured my friend Gabriel C. Brown transiting the sun during a skydive. This might be the first photo of it's kind in existence. See a video of this moment in the reply 👇

Andromeda above auroras, in collaboration with National Geographic's Babak Tafreshi. Together we photographed the same subjects from Earth and space in our most ambitious project yet, for a perspective like no other!

Above Southeast Asia, great fleets of fishing boats are visible from space by their dotted lights in open waters. More than anywhere else on Earth, they can almost be mistaken for cities!
