On this date, in 1944, 2,897 Roma and Sinte were murdered at Auschwitz. Most of them were elderly or children; most men and women of working age had already been transported to other camps. By May 15th 1944, SS command had decided to liquidize the ‘Gypsy camp’ at Auschwitz. 2/6

That night, into the morning of the 3rd, all 2,897 were murdered in gas chambers. Rudolf Höss, commander of the ‘Gypsy camp’ at Auschwitz, recorded in his memoirs that the SS recorded having never experienced such fierce resistance from inmates as they did on that night. 5/6

This unshakeable courage and resistance is marked today by Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. Today we take the time to reflect on the past, to remember the dangers of racism, and to honour those who, on this day, joined the many millions of others murdered during the Holocaust. 6/6
