☀️ #OnThisDay #Caligula was elected emperor by the Senate of Rome. At first he was highly popular & his rule was liberal. But after an illness (or poisoning?), he became diabolical. His cruelty, and also financial crises & famine caused by his expenses provoqued people's hatred.

#OnThisDay in 44BC, as his ex-soldiers fill Rome, Caesar's will is read in public revealing significant gifts to large sections of the population. Much to Antony's chagrin, the reading of Caesar's will also revealed a new heir to the Caesarian name - one Gaius Octavius

🏛️ The Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome is now open to the public for the first time in years, but visiting remains impossible for most. For the time being, here's an interactive history of the site (complete with 3-D models) from Roma: experience.mausoleodiaugusto.it/en/intro #ClassicsTwitter

I have stumbled across this Youtube channel 'Odyssey' which has gathered a range of very useful historical documentaries, especially good for teachers of the classical subjects.

It's the anniversary of the very day Troy fell, 11 June 1184 BCE (Dionysius of Halicarnassus) or 1183 (Eratosthenes in his Chronographies). Either way, here (1) the Trojan Horse on a jar found on Mykonos (2) Romare Bearden's Fall of Troy (1979) conceived with African personnel

Pompey the Great arrived in Egypt & was assassinated on 28 September 48BC, aged 57 & the day before his 58th birthday. He was seeking aid from the Pharaoh, Ptolemy XIII, in his ongoing civil war with Julius Caesar. Those advising the boy king thought it safer to kill Pompey.

Help please: a friend has two Year 13 students whose Classics A Level teachers have been axed, along with the course, by the school. I only have GCSE resources. Has anyone readily available resources for A Level CCiv they wouldn’t mind sharing? #Classicstwitter #ClassicsTeacher

What better day than #WorldHeritageDay2023 to plea yet again for the British Museum to DO THE RIGHT THING and send the Parthenon Sculptures back to their homeland and the staggering The Acropolis Museum with its view of their original setting? British Committee (BCRPM)
