New paper alert (open access)! Thanks to a new tip-dated phylogeny of bonytongue fishes (Osteoglossomorpha) with a large sample of fossils, we find that today's freshwater arapaimas and arowanas were ancestrally marine! (1/n) royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Bacchiaichthys zucchiae was a percomorph from the Late Cretaceous of Italy. Falling just outside of Batrachoidiformes, it and other fossils from Trebiciano indicate that by the Maastrichtian, spiny-rayed fishes were diversifying into their modern forms. #50daysoffossilfishes

My, what big eyes you have! Especially considering you live in the deep w/no light, apart from bioluminescence some animals display. Curious Oreo fish, named not for the much-munched American cookies but for your family name Oreosomatidae ("mountain body" in Greek) #NazcaHighSeas

I'm recruiting a MSc student to work on an NSF project focusing on morphological disparity in crinoids from Anticosti Island. My lab at Paleobiology Research Group at OU uses fossils, fieldwork, & phylogenetic modeling to study macroevolution in extinct invertebrates. Feel free to reach out & please RT!

Love that you can see the ridge comprising the K–Pg boundary running from near Sandy Hook, passing Trenton, then running parallel to the Delaware River where it meets the Delaware Bay at approx. the point it begins to widen.

Today, President Trump will issue a series of Executive Orders that deny the climate emergency facing our country in favor of a phony “energy emergency”. These performative acts show the pervasive influence that the fossil fuel industry will have in the United States over the
