How to retrieve stock copies of a specific edition in the huge stock of books built by 4 generations #OfficinaPlantiniana? Balthasar Moretus II drafted an inventory in 1643. He included letter codes referring to the 14 different attics and rooms where the books were stored.

Who can help me to locate 'Tyziniensi' in early modern Poland? The provost of this place, Jan Volerovski, visited the bookshop of the #PlantinPress in 1614. The entry reads: “R[everen]do D(omi]no Joanni Volerovskhi Preposito Tyziniensi estant present en Anvers”. #needyourhelp

Excited for the opportunity to discuss the astonishing turns in the negotiations between Anna Goos and her son Balthasar Moretus III regarding the transfer of the #PlantinPress after Balthasar II died in 1674

The intaglio printers at the #PlantinPress seem to have made their own printing ink. This explains the presence in Gaspar Courtois’s 1742 tool list of 2 pairs of pliers for burning oil. Apart from tools for making lampblack, the list included clay pots for keeping varnish and ink

Several editions of #Erasmus ended up on the Index. In this copy of Christophe #Plantin’s 1570 Index of banned books, an early modern reader drew manicules pointing to each banned edition of Erasmus. Copy: UvA Special Collections OTM O 59-557 (2)

In December 1664, Balthasar Moretus III visited the study of Athanasius Kircher in the Collegio Romano in Rome, and according to his travel account, he was impressed: “we saw a variety of curiosities in the room of the very learned and renowned Father Kircher” (my translation)

Serendipity is unfathomable. In the morning, you show the mutilated journal of 16C grain merchant Harmen Janssen to a colleague; in the afternoon, you suddenly find missing fragments in the unrelated 17C inventory of Jacques Goos’s estate.
