The "Great Resignation" has been a roller coaster for most of us. At Mr.Jackson and Koa Labs we have embraced this as an opportunity to help individuals develop professionally. Over the years I have made many transitions, here are 5 lessons on changing your "tours of duty":

Andy Palmer (@andyhpalmer) 's Twitter Profile Photo

1) The best people are always being recruited and competent managers always assume that you are being recruited all the time. Don't view someone knocking on your door as validation, only judge the new opportunity once you can separate the feeling of being desired.

Andy Palmer (@andyhpalmer) 's Twitter Profile Photo

2) Time matters - and a little more time to transition in the short term is highly valuable in the long term. If your company has invested in your development - giving them 2 weeks notice before you depart (the absolute minimum) feels like a slap in the face.

The extra 2-6 weeks that enables an effective and smooth transition of your responsibilities and commitments is a small price to pay for the loyalty and respect of the people on your team and the managers/leaders who were investing in you.

3) Always strive to go “towards something new”. Resist a process and narrative focused on “moving away from where you are”. If you are unhappy with your current tour of duty, find something that inspires you to move towards before making a change.

Andy Palmer (@andyhpalmer) 's Twitter Profile Photo

4) Carefully consider the timing of your transition. If made significant commitments that aren’t yet delivered ,consider the impact on those around you of making a change at that time vs. waiting awhile.

5) The grass is ALWAYS greener. Full stop. No matter the situation - the proverbial grass is always greener in the next tour of duty/company. It is cliche but true.

And of course this means OtterTune is hiring. Everyone warned me that hiring is hard for a new startup. It turned out to be easy because I just hired my best students! But now we need ppl that aren't my students (UI/UX, Front-end, BizOps, SAs, DevRel): ottertune.com/careers/
