This has been such a joy & I really want to be able to provide books for all families. If u have any capacity, this project would be incredibly grateful for donations. 💛📚 Putting books into the hands of kids is my most favourite thing!! bit.ly/3riBIo1

An absolute wealth of new/newish Lunar New Books this year! What a gift, after years and years of using the same books because publishers never released new ones. So much diversity of identity & experience depicted here!

There are 12,788 affordable homes in and around Chinatown and the DTES. Of them, 5,269 are for seniors. Of them, 1,577 are in buildings with Chinese affiliation. Of them, only 504 offer services — with long waitlists. My The Tyee story. thetyee.ca/News/2023/02/0…

What to eat when your cultural staples aren't in Canada? I present "Fresh off the Shelf," a six-part The Tyee series on the consuming work that diasporas put in to source ingredients, machinery and knowledge to put food products back on the table. Part1: thetyee.ca/News/2023/04/2…

Attn local food movement! Friend of the org & local foodways expert (from🥭to🧋) Christopher Cheung ✍️ (same handle on Bluesky)'s latest series unpacks how we think about 'local' food production. What does it mean when the 'international foods' aisle is stocked w/ products from the far flung region of ...Delta?

🥛 Nanak Foods of Surrey took Indian dairy products global. But before they did, Vancouver's first gurdwara had to make ghee a century ago by simmering butter. And families boiled and curdled jugs of milk to make paneer. #5 of my The Tyee series. thetyee.ca/News/2023/04/2…

🥘 Sweat, sacrifice, and innovation go into making non-western cultural products in Canada. Yet there is a lack of recognition about how these staples satisfy our diverse diets — and model sustainable supply chains. Last in my The Tyee series. thetyee.ca/News/2023/05/0…

Thx for reading "Fresh off the Shelf"! My The Tyee series was long in the making, and a thrill to meet the transformative trailblazers who put cultural staples back on the table for diasporas in Canada. All six parts here: thetyee.ca/Series/2023/04… s/o editor Jackie Wong

Like many Chinatown seniors, Ms. Liang raised her grandkids, moved out on her own, got a job (washing dishes), then started binning to help with the bills. Because of their age and marginality, they're often the target of abuse. My The Tyee story: thetyee.ca/News/2023/05/1…
