When I started my PhD at Columbia University Israel had bombed Gaza multiple times. That’s the Palestine I knew. Once, in class, I asked a respected scholar: Why can the West debate migration laws endlessly, but colonized peoples can’t ask European settlers to return to their homelands?

I told him the West build their entire political campaigns on building walls and sending home migrants that where born and raised, one generation after the other, in the West. They win based on how much pain they want to inflict on migrants and it’s called “politics”.

So how come when Algerians and South Africans demanded settlers to go home, that wasn’t even an acceptable concept? It was either incorporating settlers int their societies or no independence? Mind you that there should be no comparison whatsoever between migrants and settlers.

He simply told me, me being a graduate student at the time, that if I wanted to graduate at this university, I shouldn’t ask these questions. He didn’t even bother answering me.
