This is such a treasure trove. Like it's almost unbelievable how good this book is. One can keep coming back again and again, and learn tons of new things every single time. If you're dedicated, and have the working knowledge of chronology in Indian history, pick this up.

So-called socialist success stories tend to be things like public libraries for the global rich, whereas capitalist success stories tend to be things like doubling the income of the global poor

These income share charts are red herrings. We should look at how much gains each income has made in absolute terms. And the solution to widening inequality is not higher income taxes (only 2.5% of Indians pay income taxes) but to cut out rent seeking.

This chart should matter more. In 1977, out of 630M ppl, 410M lived under $2.15 per/d (65% of population) Today it's less than 150M (10%) out of 1.4B. People earning more than $2.15 are going up and up, and we should try to replicate Chinese success.
