Fred B. Mitchell You are the reason my Dad got the Tribune and Telander was the reason my Dad got the Sun Times. Along with Mike Paradise and Dave Feldman with their horse racing coverage of course. Chicago was a great sports writers town!!

Twenty-five years ago today I delivered the commencement speech at my alma mater, Wittenberg University. Today's graduates weren't even born yet. Yikes! Perhaps their parents still remember me. Congratulations to today's 2025 class of Wittenberg University.

Happy birthday to Cubs radio play-by-play voice Pat Hughes, who has been recognized with the Ring Lardner Award, the Ford C. Frick Baseball Hall of Fame Award and numerous other acknowledgements. Most importantly, he is a good guy.

Proud to see former Fred Mitchell Award winners Patrick Murray and Jeff Schebler on the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Murray kicked for Tampa Bay & Cleveland. Schebler, out of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ended his career as the all-time leading kick-scorer in all divisions

Sorry to learn former Bulls forward David Greenwood has passed. He was the No. 2 overall pick in 1979 after the Bulls lost a coin flip with the Lakers, who took Magic Johnson. When I took on the Bulls beat for the Tribune in 1981, Greenwood was very accommodating. RIP
