Remember this picture every single time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam." This was #Amsterdam in the 1970's via Urban Cycling Institute 🚲 . The cities we admire made better choices regarding cars, and are still making them today. Better choices instead of excuses.

Our car-dependent status quo is the result of political choices that have steered decades of financial-, spatial- and design decisions. It is time to repoliticize these decisions that shape our public spaces. (via Nicolas Blume 🚂🚃 🇺🇦#standwithukraine)

It's not about whether you personally want to or need to drive. It’s about understanding the simple truth that in cities, if everyone tries to move by car, no one moves much at all. So the more of us that are enticed to walk, bike & take transit, the better it is for EVERYONE.

Why does Copenhagen invest so much in cycle infrastructure? They calculated every km. cycled produces a societal economic gain of DKK 4.79 (€0,64); every km. driven loses DKK 5.29 (€0,71). Society therefore saves DKK 10.08 (€1,35) per km. when people cycle rather than drive.

As our kids go #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re using as an excuse. If more walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a massive number of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school. Spread the word.

To meet our climate goals & reduce car dependency, we need to give New Yorkers affordable & reliable ways to get around. It’s time for our leaders to fund bike share — like every other transportation system — to keep down prices & to expand the system. nyc.streetsblog.org/2023/12/28/new…

Remember, Paris wasn’t “always this way.” It wasn’t even this way in late 2019 when I was last there. Just a few years ago, #Paris was choking in car traffic much more. This is new. This is leadership. Cities are a result of choices. HT Fouad Khayat

The Elizabeth Line this year moved more people than the 18 lanes of the 401 freeway, the widest in North America. Traffic is simply a geometry problem, and adding one more lane won't fix it.

The first empirical evaluation of New York's congestion pricing has just been published. Spoiler: It worked really, really well🧵
