Encountered a baby basking #shark of 2.5 meters in Vestfjorden during the nicest midnight sun. A bit too shy to be tagged, but great to find out how they behave next to the boat. So they are around.

During our fieldwork in the #SharksontheMove Project we had the chance to get hold of a 2 m porbeagle which was bycaught in a gillnet. Thanks to the help of a local fishermen we had the unique opportunity to test some handing and take genetic samples. Fascinating #shark!

What are you doing this summer? We're out tagging basking sharks in Lofoten! Basking shark is the world's second biggest fish and an endangered species. The satellite tags will help provide vital information about the ecology of these massive water friends 🦈

Is it possible? One year #migration of a #baskingshark from and back to #Lofoten at 68°N. We were able to recover the tag only 80 km from where we tagged it just over year ago🥳 What a journey! What a team effort!#SharksontheMove #haisommer Havforskningsinstituttet MOVE

🐟 How far do fish travel in the ocean? Through tagging, Atlantic bluefin tuna were found to return to the same locations each year! From the Arctic Circle to Cabo Verde, all the fish returned to Norway by the end of the year! royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.10… 📷 Kate Estes/Unsplash

On #WorldFisheriesDay it is worth remembering that recreational fishing is important. See latest synthesis of marine recreational fishing in Europe onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fa… Cefas
