In our KELPER Project team meeting today Hannah Earp presented some meta-analysis results with the best use of emojis I've seen in a scientific context π€£π€£π€£

Writing up methods whilst hoping my baby kelp have survived the stormy seas in Newcastle! Big thank you to the awesome people who helped me deploy my #greengravel experiment Pippa Moore Harry Catherall Liz, Ellie & Sphaggy! #kelp #restoration

Delighted to see the first paper from our KELPER Project out in Marine Biology. We show that harvesting intensity influences kelp population structure in Chile, with implications for management link.springer.com/article/10.100β¦

This paper shows that kelp harvesting in Chile alters the population structure of Lessonia trabeculata leading to smaller more juvenilised populations. Hopefully our experimental work will provide advise on how kelp can be more sustainably harvested Natural Environment Research Council Newton Fund

Its been busy few days in Newcastle hunting for our #greengravel and monitoring our field / aquarium controls! Thanks Pippa Moore & Harry Catherall for helping me flail around in 20cms of very cold seawater! #kelp #restoration

After 2 years of covid-related delays the KELPER Project gang have finally made it to Peru to work together to better understand Peruvian kelp forests and improve management. Very exciting and great π΅πͺ + π¬π§ collaboration βοΈπ±π π€π΅πͺπ΅πͺπ¬π§ππ

Lima - β¦Instituto del Mar del PerΓΊ - IMARPEβ© - Huarmey - excited about diving Eisenia cockeri forests tomorrow β¦KELPER Projectβ©

Filling tanks at 11pm - not sure the locals will be that happy, but β¦Roberto A Uribeβ© & β¦Diego Hinostrozaβ© feeling quite chilled about it all π΅πͺ π€Ώ π±

Day 2 of KELPER Project . Great to catch up with collaborators and head north into deepest darkest Peru π΅πͺ. Canβt wait to start surveys and experimental collections 𧬠π± π§ π

Day 3 of KELPER Project - amazing to dive in the pacific and see the lush Eisenia kelp beds. Sweet surveys and data collected. Latitude only 10 deg South but water temp chilly 13 deg C. Uw viz 3 m and air temp 27deg. Beautiful but harsh coastline π₯ π± π π π π»

An amazing fieldwork day for β¦KELPER Projectβ© - seabirds, sea lions, otters, sea urchin barrens and of course Eisenia kelp forests. 2 sites nailed. Also the best freshest seafood meal ever created by the great Peruvian fishermen who are assisting us π΅πͺ π π¦ π¦¦

Day 4 KELPER Project field trip in Peru. Two new sites, lots of Eisenia forests but also common urchin barrens. Samples collected and processed in our pop-up weed lab π€£π€£π€£ π΅πͺ βοΈ π π± 𧬠π₯Ό

Day 5 KELPER Project lunch update. Today the freshest #ceviche ever eaten - 30 mins from sea to plate. Huarmey fisherman Jaka deserves his own cooking channel - here he provides the best ceviche recipe - secret is making sure fish and hands are covered in lemon π΅πͺπ¦ππ±

Day 5 β¦KELPER Projectβ© fieldwork more kelp counted and measured with samples for microbiome and genetics collected. A bit scorchio for those recently landed from the UK, while our Peru colleagues are more than comfortable β¦Natural Environment Research Councilβ© β¦Newton Fundβ© π΅πͺ π π±

Day 5 of KELPER Project field trip in Peru. Really nice site with extensive forests. Plus the fisherman/skipper cooked the most incredible fresh cerviche and fish/rice lunch. Topped off with lush sunset. Absolute scenes π΅πͺ π π
