📢 Another new paper! 📢 We don't know much about what support older autistic adults need & we know even less about how to support them if they're living in residential care. @AutismAge, Sue Fletcher-Watson & I have *TWO* open access papers out this month exploring this. 🧵THREAD🧵

Preliminary findings from our research into transitioning to adulthood for individuals who have not yet been identified as autistic, shows that kind/understanding authority figures are one of the most prominent protective factors

Higher rates of postnatal depression for autistic mothers. So important to provide better support in and after pregnancy cam.ac.uk/research/news/…

Our research on self-identification suggests for most it started either by some1 suggesting it, or because of suspected/confirmed autism in a close friend/family member. Followed by intense research which often led to a sudden realisation, but sometimes a more gradual processing

Congrats to activists for ban on the torture of electric shocks as 'treatment' for people w/ disabilities (in name of self-injurious/aggressive behavior). Read more about fight to stop the shocks in this free book chapter by Shain Neumeier and Ly Xīnzhèn M. Zhǎngsūn Brown: link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…

Preparing session on anxiety, behaviour that challenges, de-escalation and low-arousal approaches as part of a whole day autism training at a mainstream school - what is the one thing school staff need to know? What's your best advice/top priority? #AskingAutistics #TwitterEPs

New paper on #Autism & PTSD symptoms, shows many experiences that autistic folk find traumatic are not recognised in DSM-5 PTSD criteria. These experiences are just as likely to lead to high PTSD symptoms. Change needed so no autistic person is denied PTSD DX and treatment! 1/2

This fantastic autistic PhD student is interested in hearing from autistic people who have been involved in participatory research. She wants to see if what her home country of Canada can learn from us in the UK. Please do share!

72 years ago today, a truly radical idea became reality in Britain. We must never give up on the principle that everyone - whatever their class, background or means - deserves access to world-class healthcare. A thriving NHS keeps us healthy but it also makes us more equal.

I am particularly excited about this paper that just came out in Autism In Adulthood - great suggestions for anyone trying to avoid ableist language when discussing autism.

Back after a long absence - been a challenging few months following the loss of my Mum after a long and difficult battle with cancer. Also recovering from the demands of completing my doctorate, working full-time and home-schooling. Good to be back and working on a manuscript 🤞
