The education system may not make us more human and internalize more moral values and worldviews, especially if it's purely science and engineering education. The only remedy I can figure out is to look for noble spirit in the great works of the humanities throughout history.

A lot of people get confused why I'd work on something and be skeptical about it at the same time, but I don't understand why anyone would not be skeptical of what they work on? It seems like a scientific obligation to be skeptical

In academia, comparing yourself to others is a recipe for absolute misery. Sometimes you are ahead, sometimes you are behind. Eventually, you too will get that grant/paper/award. Focus on your goals, enjoy your work and look at the bigger picture.
