Broke my wrist two months ago so I relied on new machine learning models to keep "making art". Deep-dive 🧵 about the things I learned in my thousands of #dalle2 prompts and why I've decided *not* to sell the finished product.

This is a wonderfully healthy take on the process. I’ve felt most like a designer in the small victories of trying to understand a space, or capturing ideas, or creating variations, or 1:1 conversations. You do not have to livestream your life.

"After the Ambassadors", my ceramic skull for this year's #31skulls live auction fundraiser to benefit Local Color SJ . This is an homage to the anamorphic skull trick by Hans Holbein the Younger. instagram.com/tv/CjjDrMQDVLc…

Please stop drawing Frye (and other dark skinned characters for that matter) with the ashiest, greyest brown you could find in the colour pallet... Dark skin can have cool blue highlights, rich golden tones, so many beautiful hues! Here's some handy references 🧵

From Jack's linked article: "there is no US case squarely resolving the fair-use ramifications of AI training." Whether it's legal to train on open source data, commercially w/o attribution, is a pressing legal question. Keep your eyes on this issue if you're into ethAI. 👀

Looking forward to these panels! These are the UX discussions we need. Check out this super-affordable 1/2 day conference ($15) — it’s on Fri 10/28, so be sure to sign up by Tues 10/25.

It’s worth considering not just the creator’s point of view, but also the consumer. It’s not very rewarding to engage with incoherent intent. What do you get from staring at mimicry of form, flattened of all meaning? Why would a creator of that even matter?

Dance Diffusion, a music version of Stable Diffusion made by the same company, says they will not train their AI on copyrighted music. They extend this ethical courtesy to musicians but not us because they are not legally afraid of artists. I am furious, we all should be.

This is the opposite of winning the hearts & minds of designers new to these spaces. Deeply disappointed this is the way this is handled.

FYI: I’m withdrawing further activity from this platform out of respect for the community professionals whose work has been rapidly undone here…and because I prefer to not be a beta tester of bad ideas. linktr.ee/juliemeridian
